Daring Escape from Vale de Judeus Prison

A British prisoner is among five inmates who have escaped from a high-security prison in Portugal. The escape took place at the Vale de Judeus jail, located approximately 43 miles (70 km) north of Lisbon, on Saturday morning.

The Escape Details

According to the Portuguese prison service, the inmates scaled the prison wall using a ladder and received external help during their breakout. The British fugitive, Mark Cameron Roscaleer, is currently serving a nine-year sentence for kidnap and robbery.

The other escapees include two Portuguese men, an Argentinian, and a Georgian. The Portuguese inmates were serving 25-year sentences for serious crimes such as drug trafficking, theft, and kidnapping.

Security Concerns

The Sindicato Nacional do Corpo da Guarda Prisional (SNCGP), Portugal's national union for prison guards, has classified the escapees as extremely dangerous. Frederico Morais, the head of SNCGP, stated that the escape was facilitated by a lack of prison guards, which left surveillance towers unmanned.

The prison service confirmed that the inmates escaped with external assistance, which allowed them to access the outside world. The Portuguese police are now seeking international cooperation to recapture the fugitives. Additionally, a spokesperson from the UK Foreign Office acknowledged awareness of the situation and is in contact with local authorities.
