Initial Contingency Plan Presentation

The Açores Government is set to present an initial contingency plan this Thursday, aimed at addressing the possible deportation of Açorian citizens currently residing in the United States. This announcement comes in the wake of Donald Trump's recent inauguration.

Details of the Meeting

The presentation will be led by Paulo Estêvão, the Regional Secretary for Parliamentary Affairs and Communities, during a Government Council meeting scheduled in Ponta Delgada. An official source has indicated that contributions from various political parties are expected to shape the plan, emphasizing the government’s aim for regional unity.

Background and Context

Last week, Estêvão mentioned that the government was preparing for a scenario involving the deportation of Açorian citizens who may be residing illegally in the US. The plan will address crucial areas such as healthcare, housing, employment, and social security.

According to the Açorian Emigrants Association, the first term of Donald Trump witnessed fewer deportations compared to the terms of Barack Obama and George Bush. The highest number of deportations occurred between 1997 and 2013, affecting over 800 Açorian citizens. A study from the University of Açores indicated that between 1987 and 2012, there were 1,175 deportation cases involving Açorians in the US and Canada.
