Air Transport Dominates Tourism Complaints

Air transport has emerged as the leading source of complaints in the transport and leisure sector in Portugal for the first eight months of 2024. A staggering 6,270 complaints were recorded in the Electronic Complaints Book (LRE).

According to recent data, the tourism and leisure sector overall received 9,668 complaints during this period, which is a decrease from 11,980 complaints in 2023. Air transport, governed by the National Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC), accounted for the highest number of complaints, highlighting ongoing issues within the sector.

Additionally, the Food and Economic Safety Authority (ASAE) reported 1,970 complaints across various sectors, including restaurants (795 complaints), hotels (531), and local accommodations (165).

The Directorate-General for Consumers (DGC) noted that 766 complaints were filed against travel agencies, while the Mobility and Transport Authority (AMT) received 571 complaints regarding short-term vehicle rentals.

This trend raises questions about the quality of service in Portugal's tourism sector, as complaints have become a significant concern for travelers and regulators alike.
