Minister's Response to Algarve Floods

The Minister of Internal Administration, Margarida Blasco, is actively monitoring the impact of recent heavy rains in the Algarve region. In a statement, the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI) emphasized that "despite material damages, the situation is under control, and an improvement in weather conditions is expected."

On Thursday, Blasco visited the Algarve to assess the situation regarding the floods and inundations that were anticipated in certain areas. She is in continuous contact with local authorities and the National Civil Protection Authority to stay updated on developments.

Incidents Reported

This morning, a train derailed near Olhão due to a large rockslide caused by adverse weather conditions, although fortunately, there were no injuries reported. The MAI assured that the flooded areas are being managed effectively by municipal protection services, in coordination with police and civil protection authorities.

As of today, there have been 148 incidents reported in the Algarve since midnight on Friday, involving 441 operatives and 178 ground units. The municipalities most affected include Olhão and Tavira.

On Friday, two individuals were displaced in Castro Marim, and two others required rescue in Tavira — one from a vehicle and another from a residence. This morning, a woman was rescued after falling into the Ribeira de Alfandanga in Olhão, one of the hardest-hit areas, and was subsequently taken to the Local Health Unit of Algarve.

Transportation Impact

According to CP (Comboios de Portugal), the railway line in Fuseta (Olhão municipality) remains closed due to the derailment caused by rocks on the track. Passengers are being transported by bus between Fuzeta and Olhão, with no immediate resolution anticipated. Train services between Vila Real de Santo António and Fuzeta, as well as between Olhão and Faro, continue to operate normally.
