A 4.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Morocco and felt in the Algarve on the night of February 10th. The tremor struck at 10:48 PM local time, approximately 75 kilometers southwest of Tetuan. According to the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the earthquake did not cause any personal or material damage, but was felt with a maximum intensity of III on the modified Mercalli scale across various municipalities in the Algarve, including Albufeira, Faro, Loulé, Olhão, and Silves. Reports on social media indicate that the tremor was also felt in Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António. The earthquake was also noticeable in Spain, particularly in Andalusia, as reported by the newspaper Huelva Hoy. Moroccan newspaper Le Matin noted that the tremor was felt across several regions of Morocco, from Casablanca to areas near the Mediterranean, including Larache, Chefchaouen, and Rabat. This isn't the first time an earthquake from Morocco has been felt in the Algarve; a 6.9 magnitude quake in Marrakech was experienced in the region back in September 2023.
