A Unique Step Forward for Alzheimer Care

The recent I Congress of Algarve on Alzheimer and Other Dementias held on September 27-28 in Castro Marim was described as "another step" in the affirmation of a differentiated project. Castro Marim is home to the only care facility dedicated to dementia in the Algarve and Alentejo regions, which has been receiving positive feedback since its establishment a little over a year ago.

During the two-day event, hundreds gathered at the Municipal Library of Castro Marim, where the opening session featured José Cabrita, the provider of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia, which manages the Alzheimer and Dementia Residential Structure and Day Center. He highlighted the challenges faced in establishing this care home, noting that despite numerous obstacles, they have successfully created a home where currently all spots are filled with 70 residents and an additional 20 in the Day Center.

Cabrita expressed pride in the recognition the facility is gaining both nationally and internationally, stating, "This congress means our name is becoming more well-known across the country and internationally. For Castro Marim, this is a significant advantage and a great source of pride for me."

The event not only showcased the home’s achievements but also addressed various topics related to dementia, such as "National Challenges in Dementia", "Neurobiology of Dementias", and "Non-Pharmacological Therapies". The second day included discussions on the importance of hearing and smell in dementia, and the impact of dementia on families.

The closing session featured notable figures including Filomena Sintra, Vice-President of the Castro Marim Chamber, and Armindo Vicente, President of the Regional Secretariat of the Union of Portuguese Misericórdias. The congress was a testament to the dedication and hard work put into making Castro Marim a leader in dementia care.
