  • First Portuguese and first socialist to lead the European Council.

  • Goals include enhancing institutional effectiveness and promoting European unity.

A Strong Partnership for Europe

"It is the beginning of a strong partnership for Europe. The challenges ahead will not be a walk in the park, but we can overcome them," stated António Costa and Ursula von der Leyen on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

This announcement was accompanied by photographs of António Costa, Ursula von der Leyen, and Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, taking a stroll in Leopold Park, near the European Assembly building in Brussels.

Promises for the Future

The leaders emphasized that Europeans can expect results: good jobs, a healthy environment, and a stronger defense.

António Costa, who has taken on the role of President of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, leading the European Commission, began their terms on Sunday. To mark the start of their duties, Costa visited Kiev, alongside Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, and Marta Kos, the new Commissioner for Enlargement, to reinforce European support for Ukraine, which has been under invasion by Russia for nearly three years.

António Costa's Leadership Goals

With a mandate extending until May 31, 2027, Costa aims to enhance the effectiveness of the institution and promote European unity. He is the first Portuguese and the first socialist to lead the European Council. Having represented Portugal in the European Council for eight years as Prime Minister, he is familiar with several EU leaders and intends to find common ground for agreements among the 27 member states.

He succeeds Charles Michel, who held the position since 2019.
