Canoeing Champions Set to Compete in Portugal After Eight-Year Hiatus

Montemor-o-Velho Welcomes Back FISU World University Championship Canoe Sports

Montemor-o-Velho is gearing up to host the FISU World University Championship Canoe Sports from August 21-24. This marks the second time the event is organized by Portugal’s National University Sport Federation (NUSF), also known as FADU, following its successful debut in 2016.

A Prime Location for Sports

Situated in central Portugal, Montemor-o-Velho is located in the district of Coimbra and is renowned for its rich cultural, historical, and scenic value. The High Performance Sports Centre, opened in 2002, provides facilities for various water sports, including canoeing, rowing, and triathlon, and is part of the Portuguese Network of High Performance Sports Centres.

Exciting Competitions Ahead

Canoe Sprint events will feature:

  • Three groups: men, women, and mixed
  • Five categories: Canoe 1, Canoe 2, Kayak 1, Kayak 2, and Kayak 4
  • Four distances: 200m, 500m, 1000m, and 5000m

In the Canoe Marathon, participants will compete in:

  • Two groups: men and women
  • Two categories: K1 and C1 with varying distances

Canoe Sprint

With over 200 student-athletes from 24 countries and three continents, the competitors are eager to embody the motto: “paddle with passion and compete like a champion.”

Event Schedule (CET-1)

  • August 20: Official training session and Opening Ceremony
  • August 21: Canoe Sprint (200m/5000m) – Heats, Semi-Finals, Finals
  • August 22: Canoe Sprint (1000m) – Heats, Semi-Finals, Finals
  • August 23: Canoe Sprint (500m) – Heats, Semi-Finals
  • August 24: Canoe Sprint (500m) – Finals; Marathon; Closing Ceremony
