Carla Tavares Triumphs in FAUL Elections

The PS eurodeputy Carla Tavares emerged victorious in the interim elections for the Federation of the Urban Area of Lisbon (FAUL), securing 71% of the votes. She defeated Miguel Prata Roque, who garnered 29%, as reported by official sources. Tavares received 2,402 votes compared to Roque's 991 from a voting base of approximately 6,000 members.

These elections, held over the afternoon and evening across various sections, were solely for the presidency, with other federative bodies remaining unchanged. This victory positions Carla Tavares as the successor to Ricardo Leão, who recently stepped down amid controversy regarding his stance on evictions affecting individuals with social housing benefits.

At 54 years old, Tavares previously served as the mayor of Amadora before her election to the European Parliament, where she was the sixth candidate on the PS list during the June elections. Meanwhile, the mayor of Loures, who announced his candidacy for re-election this year, resigned from the FAUL earlier this month following disputes over a Chega recommendation related to evictions in municipal housing.
