Carlos Moedas, the President of the Lisbon City Council, expressed concerns over the recent selection of Alexandra Leitão as the PS candidate for the upcoming local elections, labeling it a move towards radicalization within the party. He emphasized that cities require moderation rather than extreme ideologies.

During a press briefing after visiting a new daycare construction site in Misericórdia, Moedas, who has led the council since late 2021, refrained from commenting on his potential re-election bid. He stated, “The Socialist Party has chosen a candidate that represents the increasingly radical PS under Pedro Nuno Santos.”

Pedro Nuno Santos confirmed Leitão's candidacy, highlighting her as the “right person” for the role and emphasizing her track record of achievement and realization in party leadership.

Moedas, elected by a coalition including PSD/CDS/Aliança/MPT/PPM, reiterated that cities “do not need radicals” and defended the concept of a city grounded in moderation and knowledge. He declined to engage in comparisons between his political stance and Leitão's, insisting that the current moment is not about presenting candidacies but about fostering a moderate political landscape.

With no absolute majority, Moedas reminded the public of his long-standing connection to urban issues, including education and technology, while he awaits to see the ideas that Alexandra Leitão will bring to the table.
