Chega's Bold Challenge to PSD Leadership
André Ventura, the president of Chega, has publicly challenged Luís Montenegro, the leader of the PSD, to distance himself from Miguel Albuquerque, arguing that the president of the Madeira Regional Government "no longer has the conditions" to remain in his position.
"Luís Montenegro is primarily responsible for this situation, as he should tell Miguel Albuquerque that he will not be a candidate anymore. If Albuquerque were part of Chega, I would have already told him: 'you can be a candidate, but not for Chega, certainly for another party'," Ventura stated.
The Context of the Challenge
This statement was made to reporters before the commencement of the second and final day of Chega's parliamentary sessions in Coimbra, focusing on the issue of corruption. Ventura expressed that if Albuquerque fails to recognize that he lacks both internal and external support to continue leading, it indicates he prioritizes his own interests over those of the Madeiran people. "The people of Madeira and Porto Santo need a different government," he added.
Time for Change
Ventura emphasized that the time for Albuquerque has run out, warning that his potential re-candidacy would send the wrong message about the corruption issue. "If Albuquerque runs again, it gives the impression that corruption and the small cycle of interests are worthwhile," he pointed out.
A Call for Accountability
He insisted that it is Montenegro's responsibility to send a clear message, stating that Albuquerque's re-candidacy would be a "terrible decision" and urging the PSD to tell him, "enough is enough". Ventura condemned the idea of the PSD continuing to support a corrupt cycle while claiming to fight against corruption in the Republic.
Political Fallout
In a significant political event, the Regional Budget for the upcoming year was rejected by the regional parliament, marking the first time in nearly 50 years of autonomy that such a budget has been turned down. This rejection was supported by PS, JPP, Chega, IL, and PAN, while PSD and CDS-PP voted in favor, despite lacking an absolute majority.
Next week, Chega will present a motion of censure against the Regional Government, further intensifying the political tensions in Madeira.
