Major Arrest in Portugal

The Judicial Police have apprehended a man in northern Portugal, recognized as the most powerful smuggler from Colombia. Diego Marín Buitrago, also known as "Papá Pitufo" or "el Señor", has been identified as one of the country's top criminals. His arrest follows an international warrant issued by Colombian authorities.

Buitrago is suspected of leading a criminal network in Colombia dedicated to smuggling and committing crimes against public administration, including bribing public officials from various entities. The 62-year-old was evading both Colombian and Spanish authorities.

Initially detained in Spain, he was released by a Valencia court, according to El Colombiano, which highlights that "Papá Pitufo" has led a significant smuggling operation for 25 years, primarily trafficking Chinese manufactured goods. Colombian President Gustavo Petro had previously called for his capture.

While awaiting extradition to Colombia in Spain, Buitrago fled to Portugal. He is now set to appear before the Porto Court of Appeal for a hearing on precautionary measures.
