Summary:

  • Mariana Fonseca faces renewed disciplinary action from the Order of Nurses for her involvement in a murder case.

  • She was convicted to 25 years in prison after initially being acquitted.

  • The case involved a plot to steal a €70,000 compensation from the victim.

  • Fonseca and her partner dismembered the victim's body after killing him.

  • Her accomplice, Maria Malveiro, had previously received the maximum penalty and committed suicide in prison.

Disciplinary Proceedings Reopened

The Order of Nurses (OE) has reopened disciplinary proceedings against Mariana Fonseca, the nurse convicted of the murder of Diogo Gonçalves in 2020. This decision comes after the process was previously suspended awaiting judicial outcomes related to the criminal case.

Details of the Case

The OE confirmed that the disciplinary action, which had been suspended, is now active again. They clarified that there have been no additional complaints against Fonseca, and this is the same case that was previously on hold. Fonseca was initially acquitted in April 2021 but was later sentenced to 25 years in prison by the Évora Court of Appeals in July 2022.

The Crime

Alongside her partner, Maria Malveiro, Fonseca was accused of multiple crimes including qualified homicide, profanation of a corpse, and theft. The prosecution revealed that the couple aimed to seize a €70,000 compensation from the victim, who was an IT engineer, linked to the fatal accident of his mother in 2016.

They reportedly administered drugs to the victim before killing him and subsequently dismembered his body, disposing of the remains in various locations. Malveiro, who had received the maximum penalty, tragically committed suicide in prison.

The renewed disciplinary proceedings indicate the OE's ongoing concern regarding the actions of its members involved in such serious criminal activities.
