Algarve Promotes Save Water Seal Awareness Sessions
The Algarve Tourism, together with Turismo de Portugal and ADENE – Agency for Energy, is set to host awareness and training sessions on the Save Water seal in Albufeira and Tavira on Monday, November 18.
I World Congress of Interior Tourism
From November 26 to 28, Cáceres (Extremadura, Spain) will be the venue for the I World Congress of Interior Tourism, organized by the Iberian Association of Interior Tourism (AITI). During a press conference in Portugal, Jesús Viñuales, General Director of Tourism of Extremadura, emphasized the goal of this event is to eliminate borders and foster cooperation between the two countries.
Esther Gutiérrez, Vice-President of the Diputación de Cáceres, highlighted the need to create a joint destination that appeals to new tourists by promoting authentic territories that preserve nature and culture. She stated, "We need to overcome the challenge of demographic decline and attract new visitors to these regions."
Strengthening Cross-Border Relations
AITI President Miguel Martins stressed the importance of strengthening relations between the two regions. He noted that collaboration among academia, private and public sectors is essential for mutual development.
Martins further clarified that the congress aims to be a platform for sharing valuable insights, with a strong academic component featuring 58 presentations from 35 universities and 39 exhibitors from both countries.
Addressing Development Challenges
Martins pointed out the lack of anchors for development in these territories, asserting that they must provide substantial offerings beyond just nature and culture. A highlight of the event will be the presentation of a Game of Thrones route, showcasing iconic filming locations along the Iberian border, which promises to enhance international visibility and attract more visitors.
Improving Accessibility
A critical point raised was the need for improved mobility in these regions. Martins emphasized that promoting these interior territories is futile if access remains difficult. He mentioned discussions with Pablo Pastega, Vice-President for Western Europe at FlixBus, regarding a potential connection between Cáceres and Castelo Branco. Additionally, he underscored the significance of rail transport to draw tourists to the interior, noting that while the two countries attract 200 million tourists, only 1.3 million visit the interior.
Positive Collaboration for Future Growth
Anabela Freitas, Vice-President of Centro Tourism, expressed optimism about the progress in tourism development, highlighting that unity is more important than division. She acknowledged that private entities play a crucial role in overcoming the challenges faced in these regions.
In conclusion, Martins stated that the congress comes at an ideal time for launching an effective communication platform, emphasizing the need for quality over quantity in tourism products.
