Setjetting: Lisbon's Potential as a Film Tourism Destination

The cinema tourism industry is on the rise, and there are at least two interactive maps providing the coordinates of filming locations worldwide. If all goes well, Lisbon may soon have a dedicated map for itself.

The term "setjetting" refers to a new way of traveling that has gained popularity over the years: visiting locations where films were shot. Recently, this trend has led to the creation of various online tools for those who enjoy both cinema and travel.

One such platform is SetJetters from the United States, which features a world map dotted with icons marking filming locations, serving as a collaborative tool where users can add filming points along with brief descriptions, additional information, videos, and images. For instance, in Lisbon, users can find pins at the Arco da Rua Augusta and Beco dos Surradores related to the film Agente Stone (2023). Another pin marks the Joalharia Ferreira Marques in Rossio, indicating the filming of 007 – On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969). While Lisbon has been the backdrop for many films, the SetJetters list is quite limited regarding the Portuguese capital.

Another tool with a similar goal is CineMapper. Unlike SetJetters, it does not have an app but functions similarly as an online platform. For instance, filming for the movie The House of the Spirits (1993) is marked on Rua Augusta, while the UK is filled with pins for various series and films, possibly due to the company's British origins. However, there’s nothing stopping a Portuguese user from adding filming locations to either of these maps.

In light of this tourism trend, Time Out inquired whether the Lisbon Film Commission has plans to create a cinephile map, considering one of its roles is to promote Lisbon in the international market. Teresa Loureiro, the executive coordinator, responded that it is indeed a possibility: “We are aware of the work being done by these platforms and find the potential they represent for cultural and tourism purposes in cities to be interesting. Thus, we do not dismiss the possibility of Lisbon considering a similar app.”
