Zoomarine e Nativawaky plantam floresta Miyawaki em prol da regeneração do Algarve

Promoting Biodiversity and Soil Regeneration
A recent initiative aimed at enhancing biodiversity and the natural regeneration of soils in the Algarve was successfully executed by Zoomarine in collaboration with Nativawaky. This effort comes in response to the ongoing drought conditions affecting the region.

A Collective Effort
Over 60 volunteers, including 42 children from local schools, participated in planting 330 trees and plants from more than 30 native species. This event took place at the Quinta do Meloal, owned by the AIPAR - Associação de Proteção à Rapariga e à Família.

Innovative Planting Method
This year's effort is part of the Operação Montanha Verde, which focuses on creating sustainable ecosystems. The project has already resulted in the planting of over 126,000 native trees since its inception in 2017. The current collaboration with Nativawaky introduced the Miyawaki method, an innovative approach that encourages dense and diverse forest growth, capable of achieving self-sustainability within just three years, crucial for combating drought and deforestation.

Expert Insights
According to Isabel Gaspar, a biologist at Zoomarine, this initiative exemplifies what can be achieved when communities unite for environmental protection. She emphasized the importance of engaging the younger generation in these activities to ensure a sustainable future.

Nativawaky’s Approach
Sónia Soares, founder of Nativawaky, highlighted the benefits of the Miyawaki method, stating it allows for the creation of rich, biodiverse forests that thrive naturally without the need for irrigation after a few years.

Community Involvement
This year’s event saw about 60 volunteers actively participating, underscoring the community's commitment to environmental stewardship. The ALGAR, SA organization provided organic compost, NutriVerde®, to support the initial growth of the plants, emphasizing their commitment to sustainable practices.

A Dream Fulfilled
Filomena Rosa, founder and president of AIPAR, expressed the significance of this planting for the children and families involved, stating that it helps foster a connection to nature.

With initiatives like Operação Montanha Verde, Zoomarine continues to reaffirm its commitment to environmental regeneration and building a greener, more resilient future for the Algarve.
