New Hiking Trails Open in Italy and Portugal

For hiking enthusiasts, three exciting new trails have recently opened in Italy and Portugal, including the 105-mile Cammino Retico in the Dolomites and the Palmilhar, set to become the world’s longest circular hiking route in Portugal.

Italy’s Cammino Retico

The Cammino Retico, inaugurated in May, spans 105 miles through the breathtaking Dolomites, connecting 10 remote mountain villages in northeastern Italy. This circular route starts and ends in Aune di Sovramonte, near Belluno, traversing plateaus, valleys, and past historical sites such as the Sanctuary of Saints Vittore and Corona and the Pedavena Brewery.

Hikers can expect to walk for hours without encountering crowds, with more than 50 accommodations available along the route. Since its opening, over 200 travelers have completed the hike, with a dedicated mountain biking route set to open by 2025.

Italy’s Sentiero dell’Arte e dell’Anima

The Sentiero dell’Arte e dell’Anima, or the Path of Art and Soul, begins in the beautiful Tuscan town of Pienza. This two-mile trail, unveiled in March, features 28 unique marble benches crafted by renowned sculptors, designed for reflection amidst the stunning Tuscan landscape.

Palmilhar Portugal

In Portugal, the Palmilhar trail is poised to become the world’s longest circular hiking route, measuring almost 2,000 miles. Currently, the first section is open for hiking and biking in Alenquer, with plans for 15 additional sections to be completed by the end of 2024. The trail promises to showcase Portugal’s diverse landscapes, including vineyards, national parks, and coastlines.

In the coming months, hikers will be able to track their progress through a mobile app, complete with a digital passport for logging completed sections, similar to the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage.
