Fuso Video Art Festival Kicks Off in Lisbon

The Fuso – International Video Art Festival starts today under the theme of "Resistance" with free outdoor screenings taking place in gardens and museum cloisters across Lisbon until September 1st.

In its 16th edition, the festival, organized by Duplacena, features programmed sessions by four international artists/curators, discussions, a showcase of video art from the Azores, a competition screening, and a session featuring works from students at the Ar.CO visual arts school.

This year, the festival received 245 submissions, from which 12 were selected by art historian and curator Jean-François Chougnet, along with João Pinharanda, director of the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT).

These selected videos from artists residing in Portugal or of Portuguese nationality will be presented on Wednesday at the Pátio do Carvão at the EDP/MAAT Foundation. They are in the running for the EDP/MAAT Foundation Acquisition Awards—chosen by MAAT and Fuso, as well as the Duplacena Incentive Award—voted on by the public.

Selected artists this year include AnaMary Bilbao with "Prelude", Filipa Nobre and Maria Trindade with "To the Sound of the Strange", Francisco Lourenço with "Fiesta Remembers That Her Things Are Up There", and more, showcasing works created between 2022 and 2024.

The festival will take place in various outdoor venues including MAAT, Museum of Puppetry, National Museum of Contemporary Art, Palácio Sinel de Cordes, Palácio Galveias, and Espaço Duplacena.

For this year’s edition, the organization invited four artists and curators to curate the festival’s programming: Bruno Zgraggen (Switzerland), Laila Hida (Morocco), Lori Zippay (USA), and Marie Voignier (France).

Their proposals challenge the way stories are told in history, featuring films that explore decolonization, occupied territories, shared narratives, and the resistance involved in creating identity and belonging.
