As we say goodbye to October and welcome November, we enter the final month of meteorological autumn, which spans from September 1 to November 30. What does this mean for your travel plans? Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t mean fewer opportunities for exploration.
In November, temperatures drop significantly compared to October, especially in the interior regions where frosts become more frequent and intense in the mountainous areas. With the recent clock change, nights are longer, making it more common to wear your coat.
However, according to the latest forecasts from the Meteored reference model, temperatures are expected to be above average across much of the country until November 10. This means you should take advantage of the pleasant weather to embark on that long-awaited adventure before the year ends.
The maps indicate that temperatures may be 1 to 3 ºC higher than normal across mainland Portugal and the Central and Eastern Groups of the Azores.
Not sure where to go? We have the perfect suggestion: the Queda do Vigário in Alte, Loulé.
The Best Time to Discover This Algarvian Jewel
This is one of those well-kept secrets that you might not find without help in Algarve, far from the buzz of beaches and tourists crowding coastal cities.
Located in the charming village of Alte, about 30 minutes from Loulé, this waterfall—officially known as Cascata de Alte—is a hidden gem nestled among green hills, where water cascades down about 24 meters, forming a perfect lake for a refreshing dip.
It draws water from the Alte stream, which originates at Quinta do Freixo and merges with the Algibre stream near Paderne, creating the Quarteira stream.
The best part? This is truly “the best time of year” to visit, as stated by Versa magazine—and we couldn't agree more.
“The weather remains pleasant and there are fewer people in this region of the country compared to summer, which attracts thousands of Portuguese and foreign tourists,” explains the publication.
A Magical Place
It’s no wonder that Queda do Vigário attracts both locals and visitors. The almost magical scenery—with water flowing gently, framed by typical regional vegetation—creates a special atmosphere.
With warmer temperatures, the lake at the base of the waterfall becomes a popular spot for those looking to cool off. Even the cold water doesn’t deter those who, after relaxing on the grassy area right in front, can’t resist taking a plunge.
And it’s not just the setting that impresses; the site is steeped in interesting history, filled with legends and tales dating back to the village's early days.

Legend has it that the name “Queda do Vigário” relates to a time when a parish priest fell into the waters while walking nearby—an accident that seems to have been forgiven by the beauty of the place.
To make the most of your visit, bring a towel, some snacks, and take time to relax by the lake.
However, a word of caution: the road to Queda do Vigário can be quite bumpy, but the scenery makes the effort worthwhile. We recommend parking your car near the Alte cemetery and preparing for a slightly steep walk of about 300 meters on a dirt path.
Afterwards, don’t miss exploring the village of Alte itself. This place is a charm, with white houses, colorful flowers in windows, and a picturesque charm that looks straight out of a postcard.
Believe it: it’s the perfect place for those wanting to discover a different Algarve, one that goes beyond the beaches, where nature and tranquility are the main attractions.
