Is it possible that you've never heard of Pedralva? This once-forgotten village in the Algarve has transformed into a sought-after tourist destination, rivaling popular spots like Portimão, Albufeira, Tavira, and Lagos. Let's dive into its fascinating journey!
Less than 20 years ago, only 9 original inhabitants lived in Pedralva, and 50 houses were in advanced ruin.
Not long ago, Pedralva was practically deserted. In 2006, it had just 9 original residents and 50 houses in dire disrepair, according to the local newspaper Postal do Algarve. The population had dwindled from 100 in the last century to a mere nine, highlighting the severity of the demographic crisis.
From 2006 to 2008, over 200 owners and heirs were sought across Portugal and Europe to negotiate the purchase of around 30 houses. The Vila do Bispo Municipality played a crucial role in this revitalization process, investing in essential infrastructure like underground electrical cables, new plumbing, paving, and lighting.
The main goal of the Aldeia da Pedralva project is to embody an active village tourism, offering various activities for visitors. Highlights include mountain biking with 30 bicycles available to explore over 300 km of trails and surfing, thanks to the favorable ocean conditions that have led to the establishment of a surf school.
Some of the best surfing beaches in the Algarve region are Praia do Amado and Praia da Bordeira.
This incredible transformation has resulted in a completely renewed and inspiring village, now featuring holiday homes that accommodate between two to eight people, all restored according to their original designs.
What else does Pedralva offer beyond active village tourism?
Located in the heart of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park (PNSACV), Pedralva boasts breathtaking landscapes, perfect for hiking, picnics, or even jeep tours along the western coast, Sagres, and Monchique. The most recommended beaches for surfing are Praia do Amado and Praia da Bordeira, while Salema, Boca, and Cabanas Velhas are often considered the best beaches in the western Algarve.
For those who enjoy boat trips, they are highly recommended for experiencing the natural beauty of the coast.
One of the activities offered by the Barlavento Algarve landscape is cycling along trails near the cliffs, close to Sagres and Vila do Bispo.
For an excellent cultural experience, visit the Museum of the Sea and the Earth in Carrapateira, the Sagres Fortress, and the interior of the Cabo de São Vicente lighthouse, all within close proximity to Pedralva.
And lastly, don't miss out on the local gastronomy! The restaurant Sítio da Pedralva is a must-visit on the Costa Vicentina, where you can try the codfish in bread à moda da Pedralva and other specialties.
