A Unique Sustainable Christmas Experience at AlgarveShopping
This year, the festive spirit has arrived at AlgarveShopping in Guia in an innovative way. The shopping center showcases a unique installation: a sustainable Christmas tree made from 100kg of recycled plastic, created by artist Madalena Martins, winner of the Portuguese Original Projects (POP) Award from the Serralves Foundation. This installation, titled "Natal Tropical", can be visited until January 6.
The installation beautifully integrates art with the natural beauty of the Algarve, produced over four months using 350kg of plastic sourced from laundry packaging, excess materials from the graphic industry, and repurposed items from the artist's other projects. This reflects AlgarveShopping's commitment to sustainability and promoting conscious artistic practices.
In addition to the Christmas tree, the surrounding installation features 250kg of repurposed plastic, further enhancing the immersive experience. This project also emphasizes social inclusion, engaging inmates from Paços de Ferreira and Vale do Sousa prisons to craft Christmas decorations under the artist’s guidance. This manual work not only promotes resource reuse but also aids in the social reintegration of the participants.
The composition of the tree combines traditional red and gold with the lush green of tropical plants, creating a visual harmony that transports visitors to a tropical Christmas garden. Notably, nautical buoys celebrate the Algarve's strong connection to the sea.
Carla Martins, Director of AlgarveShopping, expressed pride in collaborating with Madalena Martins, highlighting how the project aligns with their Christmas campaign that promotes greater awareness when gifting. “This project reflects our commitment to sustainability and social inclusion,” she stated.
The "Natal Tropical" installation, composed of the tree and its decorations, features a total of 2,100 meters of recycled plastic, showcasing the shopping center's dedication to extending the lifecycle of materials and adopting sustainable practices. This initiative aligns with AlgarveShopping’s sustainability goals achieved over the past decade, including a 33% reduction in energy consumption and recycling over 51% of generated waste, contributing to a greener and more inclusive future.
