Russian Photographer Unveils War's Hidden Realities in Lisbon
This week, Russian photographer Nikita Teryoshin is set to inaugurate an exhibition in Lisbon that reveals "the behind-the-scenes of wars, before the weapons reach the battlefields". This compelling work has earned him a prestigious World Press Photo award.
According to the Narrativa space, the exhibition titled Nothing Personal — The Back Office of War, opens on Friday and marks the first time this work is showcased in Portugal. It is described as a timely and sarcastic portrayal of the war's underbelly.
The images presented in Teryoshin's work were captured between 2016 and 2023 at arms exhibitions and fairs across Europe, Africa, Asia, and both North and South America. The photographer aims to expose the dark underworld of the arms industry, where heads of state, generals, and businessmen observe demonstrations of weapon lethality as if attending an art exhibition.
Teryoshin deliberately obscures the faces of the attendees, emphasizing that he does not intend to assign blame to individuals. Instead, the anonymous arms dealers serve as a metaphor for a shadowy business that evades media scrutiny.
With Nothing Personal — The Back Office of War, Teryoshin won the 2020 World Press Photo award in the Contemporary Issues category. This year, the homonymous book published by Ghost Books earned him the Best Photography Book award in the creative category at the PhotoEspaña festival.
The exhibition's opening is scheduled for 7 PM on Friday, with Teryoshin in attendance. Additionally, on Sunday, he will lead a conversation at Narrativa, providing participants with insight into his creative process. Registration for the conversation is available on Narrativa's official website at www.anarrativa.com.
The exhibition is free to enter and will be on display until December 21. Narrativa, inaugurated in 2022, serves as a studio, gallery, library, and non-profit association dedicated to promoting and valuing photography as a form of expression and communication.
