A Cultural Extravaganza in Lisbon

This September, Lisbon will be alive with music, cinema, masks, and video art in a series of free public performances as part of the Festas na Rua organized by the local government. The festival, running from September 7 to 29, will feature nine major concerts, three festivals dedicated to short films, video art, and for the first time, piano, alongside a parade centered around the Iberian mask.

Musical Highlights

The festival will transform the city’s green spaces—gardens, bandstands, squares, and washhouses—into vibrant venues for musicians, orchestras, and national and international artists.

  • Opening Concert: The festival kicks off with a spectacular performance at Vale do Silêncio featuring arias from operas such as Carmen, Aida, and Madama Butterfly, performed by the Gulbenkian Choir and Orchestra under the baton of Cesário Costa.
  • Portuguese Music Spotlight: On September 13, the guitarist and composer António Chainho bids farewell to the stage with Lisboa Saudade, accompanied by renowned artists like Carminho and António Zambujo.
  • Solo Performance by Rui Massena: The day after, conductor Rui Massena will perform solo, accompanied by an ensemble and special guests.
  • Celebration of Multicultural Music: A musical conversation featuring Maro, Mayra Andrade, and Criolo will take place on September 28, celebrating the diversity of Portuguese music.

Jazz in the Gardens

The festival also includes Jazz in the Garden on two Thursdays. On September 12, Cristina Branco and Mário Laginha will perform at the Quinta da Alfarrobeira, while on September 19, the Quinta da Paz will host João Paulo Esteves da Silva and the Matosinhos Jazz Orchestra.

Sunday Philharmonic Concerts

Every Sunday evening, Philharmonic Bands will showcase traditional, popular, and classical repertoires across three concerts at various gardens throughout the city.

Colorful Iberian Mask Parade

The Iberian Mask will return with a grand parade featuring over 450 participants from various regions of Portugal and Spain, weaving through Lisbon's downtown.

Cinema and Video Art

Cinema no Estendal will present short films focusing on queer themes and the 50th anniversary of the April 25 Revolution. The Fuso International Video Art Festival will also take place outdoors from August 27 to September 1.

Finally, the festival will conclude with the Piano City event, featuring over 30 concerts from renowned and emerging pianists across various iconic locations in Lisbon, including Palácio Galveias and Museu de Lisboa – Palácio Pimenta.
