Recovery Efforts Underway in Douro River

Efforts have resumed in the Douro River to recover two critical components linked to the investigation of the helicopter crash that occurred on Friday in Samodães. The operation, which began at 8:00 AM on Sunday, is being conducted by a team of seven divers from the Maritime Police's forensic diving group. According to Rui Silva Lampreia, the commander of the Northern Maritime Police, the search will continue until the "computer and the tail rotor" of the firefighting helicopter are located.

Details of the Incident

The helicopter, which tragically fell into the Douro River, resulted in the loss of five military personnel from the Emergency Protection and Rescue Unit (UEPC) who were returning from a fire in the Baião municipality. The pilot, aged 44, is recovering from injuries and is expected to stay in the orthopedic ward of the Vila Real Hospital for a few more days.

Search Operations and Safety Measures

Today's diving operation is supported by two additional vessels, one from the Douro and Leixões Ports Administration (APDL) and another from the Maritime Police, ensuring safety in the area. "The passage of recreational boats is not prohibited but is controlled, allowing one boat at a time to pass at a specific speed," explained Silva Lampreia.

Importance of Recovery

The regional commander emphasized the need to locate the two crucial helicopter components for the ongoing investigation into the accident, which includes the navigation computer and the tail rotor. The body of the fifth military member was found at 4:10 PM on Saturday during underwater searches in the vicinity of the crash site. Among the five members aboard, the ages ranged from 29 to 45, with three hailing from Lamego and others from Moimenta da Beira and Castro Daire.

Investigation Underway

The GPIAAF, the Portuguese State organization responsible for investigating aviation and railway accidents, is actively engaged in this investigation. The crashed helicopter, an AS350 Écureuil, is operated by HTA Helicópteros, based in Loulé, Algarve. Meanwhile, the funerals for the five victims are scheduled for this Sunday.
