A Lunch of Premonitions and Political Ambitions

During a hearty meal of mão de vaca, Élvio Sousa, the leader of the JPP, shared his insights and aspirations for governing Madeira with Observador. Citing Albert Einstein, he expressed that there is a "driving force more powerful than steam, electricity, and atomic energy: the will". This quote sets the tone for his optimism about the JPP's meteoric rise, as he senses a transformative energy in the air ahead of the upcoming elections.

Cosmic Signs and Political Strategies

Élvio's premonitions started even before arriving at the restaurant, where he humorously noted difficulties with his car key, suggesting "something is in the air… the stars are changing". Throughout the campaign, he has claimed that the stars indicate a growing support for the JPP, despite conflicting polling data. He is confident about increasing their representation in the assembly, believing he has seen in the stars that he will govern Madeira.

The Journey of JPP

At the same table, Paulo Alves, a fellow JPP member, reminisced about their journey since 2014 when they attempted to establish the party. They faced obstacles, including a near-miss with an overbooked flight while carrying 9,000 signatures to officially register the party. Élvio humorously remarked on the "cosmic occurrences" that impeded their progress, reinforcing his belief in a mystical connection to their political journey.

A New Political Landscape?

With elections approaching, Élvio anticipates a potential coalition with the Socialists to dislodge the PSD from power for the first time. In 2024, after the elections revealed judicial issues involving PSD’s Miguel Albuquerque, the JPP and PS attempted a post-election coalition, but it failed. This time, Élvio has requested four days to negotiate properly, hoping to establish a different outcome.

Understanding Voter Sentiment

Post-elections, if the PSD fails to secure an absolute majority, Élvio plans to conduct his own polling to gauge voter desires directly. He aims to connect with the electorate through social media and television, inviting feedback on their preferred governance model. Despite critics labeling him as "populist", he asserts that his approach is "popular" and grounded in direct communication with the people.

Embracing the Uncertain

As he reflects on the eclectic decor of the restaurant, which resembles an eccentric museum, Élvio acknowledges the uncertainty of the political landscape, asserting that "no one is prepared for these scenarios". The JPP aims to pioneer a new political experience in Madeira, marking a significant shift in the region's governance.
