PS/Algarve requests immediate removal of toll booths on the A22 and all Scuts.
PS/Algarve claims that the elimination of tolls on the Via do Infante is the culmination of a political commitment made by the socialists, marking the conclusion of a journey that began in 2016 under a Socialist government. In a recent statement, PS/Algarve highlighted the progressive reduction of toll prices introduced in 2016, which included a 15% reduction, followed by another 30%, and finally an additional 15%, resulting in a total reduction of 60% compared to toll prices in 2015.
The socialists also emphasized that during the campaign for the 2024 Legislative Elections, Pedro Nuno Santos and the PS candidates for the Algarve pledged to eliminate tolls entirely. They noted that the approval of the Socialist proposal to abolish tolls in June at the Assembly of the Republic received only opposing votes from PSD and CDS-PP, which broke a long-standing consensus among mayors, business associations, civic groups, unions, and political parties in the Algarve against toll charges.
Additionally, PS/Algarve advocates for the removal of toll booths, prompting them to submit a request to the government for the immediate removal of tolls on the A22 and all Scuts. They also pointed out that 2025 is set to be the year for the completion of the electrification of the Algarve train line, an investment of 80 million euros initiated by the current PS Secretary-General while serving as Minister of Infrastructure in António Costa's government.
