Exploring the Beauty of Southern Spain and Portugal on Two Wheels
Motorcycling offers an incredible way to absorb the world around you, engaging all your senses with panoramic views, the feel of the weather, and the aromas of nature. Reporter Paris Wolfe and her partner Gary Mallory embarked on a thrilling two-week journey to celebrate a milestone birthday, merging their dreams of adventure.
The Journey Begins
After extensive research, they chose a 14-day motorcycle trip through Southern Spain and Portugal, avoiding Morocco due to road concerns. They booked with IMT Bike, a Madrid-based tour company, renowned for their knowledge of the region and their fleet of BMW motorcycles. They arrived in Malaga, the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, ready to explore.
Group Dynamics
Joined by a group of 11 riders, all from the U.S. except for a couple from Australia, the journey promised camaraderie and shared experiences. The riders ranged from seasoned bikers to newbies, all eager to traverse the twisting, mountainous terrain of Southern Spain.
Riding Through Stunning Landscapes
The group spent 10 days riding, covering 1,500 miles on roads that varied from scenic coastal routes to challenging mountain passes. The Andalusian mountains provided breathtaking views, although the lack of guardrails added an element of thrill. They encountered picturesque landscapes filled with olive groves, ancient cities, and the delightful sight of black pigs foraging for acorns.
Culinary Delights and Cultural Experiences
The trip was not just about riding; it was also about savoring the local cuisine. From Iberico ham to fresh olives, each stop offered a culinary delight. They explored charming towns like Nerja, known for its prehistoric caves, but prioritized riding over lengthy tourist stops.
Accommodation and Comfort
With a support van carrying their luggage, they stayed in 10 different cities, including Granada, Cascais, and Seville. Each hotel was more than a place to rest; many had historical significance and stunning views, like the Pousada Cidadela Cascais, built within a 16th-century fort.
Weather Challenges
Despite the fantastic weather typical for Southern Spain, they faced two days of rain, impacting their ride and experience. They navigated through mud-covered roads, showcasing the unpredictability of travel.
The Final Days
Their adventure culminated in Ronda, famous for its dramatic Puente Nuevo bridge. After an exhilarating journey, they returned to Malaga for a final day of sightseeing before heading back to reality in Cleveland.
This two-week motorcycle adventure not only celebrated a birthday but also created lasting memories through the beautiful landscapes and rich cultures of Southern Spain and Portugal.
