Summary:

  • The ECHR ruled against Ricardo Salgado's claims of an unfair trial.

  • The case involved a €4 million fine from the Bank of Portugal.

  • This fine was confirmed by the Competition Court in Portugal.

European Court's Decision on Ricardo Salgado

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has dismissed claims from Ricardo Salgado, the former head of Banco Espírito Santo (BES), regarding the fairness of his trial. This decision pertains to an administrative offense initiated by the Bank of Portugal, which led to a hefty €4 million fine imposed on Salgado in September 2020. This fine was later upheld by the Competition Court.

Salgado had argued that he was denied a fair trial in the proceedings that resulted in the fine. However, the ECHR found no merit in his claims, reinforcing the legitimacy of the actions taken by the Portuguese authorities against him.
