Loulé's Campaign Fair Returns

On the weekend of December 7th and 8th, Loulé will host the enchanting Christmas Fair at the old carnival warehouse next to the Convent of Santo António. Organized by the Municipality of Loulé, this event celebrates the authentic Christmas traditions of the Algarve. Visitors can immerse themselves in local culture, explore handcrafted products, and find unique Christmas gifts, all while supporting the local economy. Expect to see 100 exhibitors sharing stories and showcasing their skills.

The fair promises to be one of the most beloved Christmas events in the Algarve, featuring a vibrant program of entertainment with musical performances and creative workshops for the entire family. Notable acts include the duo “Mito Algarvio” and the group “D’Alma rufada.” Kids can enjoy fun activities like tapestry and woodworking with LoulĂ© Criativo. Culinary demonstrations by Cozinha Partilhada de Salir will enhance local flavors, showcasing ingredients like carobs and olives. The fair runs on Saturday from 10:00 to 20:00 and Sunday from 12:00 to 20:00, with free admission. It promises two days of celebration in the heart of the Algarve.

Salt and Artistry in Castro Marim

In the picturesque town of Castro Marim, one of the most extraordinary Christmas events comes alive with a nativity scene made of salt at the charming Casa do Sal. This artisanal masterpiece uses over three tons of salt to shape around 700 figures and numerous traditional Christmas scenes. The nativity scene not only reflects the sacredness of Christmas but also honors the region's rich craftsmanship.

Filomena Sintra, the deputy mayor, emphasizes the importance of promoting Castro Marim's “white gold” salt and reviving local craftsmanship. Young artisans are revisiting ancient techniques to create modern items, such as woven lamps, using traditional materials. At Casa do Sal, visitors can admire the craftsmanship and watch artisans at work, witnessing the meticulous creative process that transforms simple raw materials into unique pieces.

These Christmas events provide a unique experience in the Algarve, blending history, religion, and cultural traditions. The art of salt, which has characterized Castro Marim for centuries, finds new life in a nativity scene that captures the essence of Christmas. Meanwhile, in Loulé, visitors will see firsthand the soul of a region where the past and present beautifully intertwine.
