New Bridge Inauguration
The new bridge providing access to Faro Beach will be inaugurated this Sunday, October 12, and will be operational immediately, replacing the old structure, as announced by the Mayor of Faro, Rogério Bacalhau.
The ceremony's time is yet to be confirmed, but a government representative is expected to attend. This €6.6 million investment marks a long-awaited infrastructure improvement for the residents of Faro.
Mayor Bacalhau acknowledged that some minor works, such as the installation of LED lights, are still pending. However, he assured that the bridge will be ready for use on Sunday, emphasizing that these remaining tasks are not significant enough to delay its operation.
Importance of the New Structure
This project is particularly important for improving access to Faro Beach, located on one of the barrier islands of Ria Formosa, which has been served by an old and narrow bridge requiring alternating traffic. Bacalhau described this as one of the most anticipated projects by locals, highlighting its significance as a major achievement for the community.
The mayor, who is set to leave the Faro City Hall to assume the presidency of Águas do Algarve, noted that during his three terms, the municipality executed hundreds of projects, but the new bridge is undoubtedly the most emblematic and complex. He emphasized the complexities involved in constructing the bridge over an environmentally sensitive lagoon zone classified as a natural park.
Collaboration for Environmental Protection
To protect the environmental heritage, the project was conducted in collaboration with various organizations, including the CCDR, APA, and the University of Algarve. Bacalhau praised the project’s execution, which stayed largely on schedule with only a two- to three-month delay due to minor adjustments.
When asked if the old bridge would be closed after the new one opens, Bacalhau confirmed that the old structure would indeed be deactivated following the inauguration of the new bridge.
