Triton, a new global triathlon series, is ready to host its world championship in Portimão, located in the picturesque Algarve, Portugal, from October 24–26. This event marks a significant expansion of Triton's offerings worldwide.
Expanding Global Footprint
Having successfully hosted events in Portugal and Brazil in 2024, Triton is set to add events in exciting locations such as the United Arab Emirates, China, Spain, and Greece. The championship in the Algarve will feature various race formats including sprint, middle, and long distances, a corporate team series final, a kids' race, and a country vs. country competition.
Future Plans and Market Protection
Paulo Passos Leite, founder and chairman of Triton World Series, shared ambitions to expand to 30 countries with 60 races and 180 competitions over the next decade. He emphasized that triathletes, who generally have a higher average income, are an appealing demographic for travel.
To ensure a fair competition landscape, Triton plans to implement market protection clauses for host destinations, preventing competing events from taking place in the same area within the same month.
Innovative Race Formats
The Triton series offers two race formats: Triton 1, the traditional triathlon, and Triton 3, which separates the swim, bike, and run into a three-day event. Both formats include short, middle, and long-distance competitions. This structure minimizes road closures and local disruptions, creating a safer environment for both participants and the community.
Leite noted that this three-day format allows for better venue utilization, enabling hosts to showcase the best of their region across different locations for each discipline.
Unique Scoring System
In a departure from traditional triathlon scoring, Triton employs a point system for the Triton 3 format. Athletes earn points based on their finish position in each discipline, with the lowest total score determining the overall winner. This approach ensures that all disciplines are valued equally, fostering a more balanced competition.
Leite expressed confidence in Triton's innovative structure, stating that initial successes have paved the way for further expansion in the triathlon community. "Once they try it, they absolutely love it," he concluded, highlighting the niche and passionate nature of the triathlon tribe.
