Major Enhancements to Lisbon Metro
Five stations of the Lisbon Metro are set to have new elevators operational by the end of 2025, with an additional five more equipped by 2027. Furthermore, 21 stations will undergo equipment replacements by 2029, according to the public transport company.
Current Projects:
- Campo Pequeno, Intendente, Martim Moniz, Picoas, and Praça de Espanha will have their new elevators completed by the end of this year.
- The elevators at Alto dos Moinhos, Anjos, Avenida, Jardim ZoolĂłgico, and Laranjeiras will be installed in the next two years.
Future Plans (2026-2029):
- The Metro will replace elevators at 21 stations including Alfornelos, Alvalade, Amadora Este, and Santa ApolĂłnia.
Despite persistent complaints from associations and a total of 525 complaints about escalators and 420 about elevators in 2024, the Metro reported an average availability rate of 85% for elevators last year.
Maintenance Challenges:
- The Metro has faced difficulties with service providers regarding maintenance and parts supply. In response, they are exploring new contracting solutions and advanced technologies for maintenance.
- A new technical assistance model was announced in August for high-traffic stations.

- The Lisbon Metro network consists of 56 stations equipped with 121 elevators, 234 escalators, and 10 moving walkways. These facilities operate approximately 18 hours daily, with varying technological generations and conditions.
Modernization Goals
- Ongoing modernization plans aim to ensure 93% of stations are fully accessible by 2026, with an investment exceeding €22.5 million since 2018. The Metro is committed to improving accessibility conditions across its network.
Upcoming Interventions:
- Future upgrades for escalators and moving walkways are planned for Alameda, Chelas, Olaias, Olivais, and Parque stations in 2026.
