The event will run on the first three Sundays of this month (1st, 8th, and 15th), with the opening day dedicated to fashion, accessories, and decorations. By noon, an impressive 2,146 attendees had already visited the Praça do Peixe.
The President of the Funchal City Council, Cristina Pedra, praised the remarkable turnout on the first day, noting that the influx of visitors was boosted not only by locals but also by several cruise ship passengers docking at the port.
Pedra emphasized that 'Natal na Praça' symbolizes the beginning of the Christmas festivities for many in Funchal. The upcoming Sundays will feature themes focused on Christmas delicacies and themed fairs, showcasing a variety of products, including fashion, decorations, paintings, antiques, crafts, and gastronomy.
The initiative serves as a showcase for local artisans, providing them with an opportunity to display their brands and products. This year, 125 participants are involved across the three Sundays, with 44 participants on the opening day. There has been a notable increase in interest year after year, with the Funchal City Council receiving 163 applications, reflecting a 13% increase compared to last year.
