Unveiling the Hidden Algarve and Alentejo
Turismo Fora d’Horas is a new initiative aimed at placing the lesser-known rural areas of Algarve and Alentejo on the tourism map. This platform launched this month offers a variety of unique destinations and experiences that go beyond the typical tourist routes.
Unique Experiences Await
Visitors can explore a range of local arts and crafts, from traditional percebes (a unique seafood) to amendoim (local peanuts). The platform promotes activities such as birdwatching, artistic walks, and visits to archaeological and cultural heritage sites, including the Escoural cave.
Meet Local Characters
The platform also shares stories of local personalities like António Afonso Bernardino, a popular poet from Aljustrel, and Maria Teresa Marques, one of the first female fishermen in Carrapateira, who shares her experiences at the Museum of Land and Sea.
Customizable Travel Options
Tourists can find event suggestions, a directory of local tourism operators, and options to create personalized routes tailored to their interests. This initiative aims to promote sustainable tourism, enhance local economies, and reduce the seasonal pressures on these regions.
A New Narrative for Tourism
One of the highlights of the project is the web series "Turismo Fora d’Horas," featuring characters like grandfather Abílio and granddaughter Joana, designed to immerse viewers in the local experience and humanize these rural territories.
Collaborative Effort
This initiative is a collaboration among three local action groups: Vicentina, ESDIME, and Terras Dentro, focusing on various municipalities across both regions, including Aljezur, Lagos, Almodôvar, and Montemor-o-Novo. The goal is to unveil unique traditions and experiences that enrich every visitor's journey.
