David de Pina has made history by winning Cabo Verde's first-ever Olympic medal. Three years ago, he moved to Portugal and had to work in construction to support his family.

A Dream Deferred

Janino Livramento, a physical education teacher from Cabo Verde, spent two years preparing to attend the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. He dreamed of witnessing the historic opening ceremony, which took place outside of a stadium for the first time. Unfortunately, upon arriving in Paris, he learned that attendance would be limited.

However, despite missing the opening ceremony, Janino experienced an unforgettable moment as he watched David de Pina win the historic medal for his country while seated among other Cabo Verdeans at the boxing competition.

Sacrifices for a Dream

David de Pina had his own challenges. He trained in Portugal under coach Bruno de Carvalho since 2021 and received a modest Olympic solidarity scholarship. Financial difficulties forced him to temporarily leave boxing to work in construction in Algarve, where he worked 10-hour days.

"Imagine a talented athlete working on construction sites while dreaming of Olympic glory. It was painful for me, but I had to provide for my family," he shared with journalists after his semifinal bout.

Despite this setback, David eventually returned to boxing, determined to achieve his dream. He proudly stated, "I learned carpentry since I was young, and I worked hard. But I prefer to box and win medals at the Olympics."

A Historic Achievement

Before even winning a medal, David made history as Cabo Verde's first boxer to reach the Olympic podium after 28 years since their first participation in Atlanta 1996.

"I believe I am someone now. My boxing is recognized, and I am the best in Africa," he expressed with pride.

David's journey symbolizes not only his personal triumph but also a collective effort for his family and country.

Janino, who managed to secure a ticket to witness David's victory, expressed his pride in being part of this historic moment, stating, "We are a nation of 500,000 inhabitants, and now we are part of Olympic history."

David's sacrifices were not just for himself but for a better life for his family and to bring pride to his country. He emphasized, "If it were just for me, I might have given up. But I fought hard for better conditions for my family and to give my people an Olympic medal. This is a story of perseverance."

Janino, inspired by David, reflected on his journey to the Olympics, showing that dreams can come true in unexpected ways.
