New Environmental Passports for Cars in Portugal
Soon, all cars sold in Portugal and Europe will be required to have an environmental passport. This digital document will be accessed through a QR code that assigns a unique identifier to each vehicle, and for electric models, it will provide detailed data on the entire battery life cycle.
According to Motor 24, the European Commission expects this measure to be enforced within two years. The aim is to create a transparent and tamper-proof mechanism to reduce the negative social and environmental impacts resulting from the production of electric vehicle batteries, regardless of their manufacturing stage. This initiative will record the pollution linked to each battery's production, penalizing companies that employ environmentally harmful extraction and manufacturing methods.
The environmental passport will include essential information about the origin of materials used in the battery, promoting sustainable raw material usage and revealing the supply chains involved. Key details such as nominal capacity (Ah), voltage specifications, power supply capacity, useful life, and energy efficiency will also be provided.
Although the requirement will officially start in 2027, manufacturers are already making strides. For instance, Volvo has introduced the battery passport in its EX90 model, enhancing its reputation for sustainability. This feature will gradually expand to other fully electric models of the brand.
There will be two versions of the digital document: a simplified version for vehicle owners and a comprehensive version for regulatory bodies. Starting February 2027, all new traction batteries, batteries for two-wheel vehicles, and industrial batteries with a capacity greater than 2 kWh sold in the community space will also fall under the Digital Product Passport (PDP).
