The 7th Edition of ALUT - Algarviana Ultra Trail

The 7th edition of the ALUT - Algarviana Ultra Trail kicks off this Thursday in Sagres, attracting over a hundred athletes aiming to conquer 308 kilometers of trails across nine Algarve municipalities, all within a maximum of 72 hours. This event is touted as the largest and toughest trail running competition in Portugal.

A Unique Challenge

This year, the ALUT carries the title of the longest continuous running event in Portugal, featuring an extra challenge as participants will navigate through the three highest points in the Algarve.

International Participation

Bruno Rodrigues, the event director, emphasizes that the primary goal since 2017 has been to combat the seasonal effects in the region. Notably, over 30% of this year’s participants hail from outside Portugal, with British, Spanish, and French athletes making up the majority of international entries.

Revitalizing Forgotten Villages

The course traverses the interior of the Algarve, often overlooked by tourists, bringing life to these forgotten villages with athletes, supporters, and curious onlookers during the event.

Record-Breaking Potential

With a record time of 38 hours for completing the over 300 kilometers, there is a high likelihood that this record may be broken this year, given the increased competitiveness and the largest number of international athletes and female participants ever.

Real-Time Tracking and Sustainability Initiatives

All competitors will carry geolocators for safety and real-time tracking, which fans can follow on the official website. Additionally, this year’s edition emphasizes sustainability, aiming to reduce emissions and waste, including a complete ban on disposable plastics at aid stations.

Event Details

The ALUT - Algarviana Ultra Trail 2024 will commence at 2:30 PM on Thursday from the Beliche Fortress in Sagres, passing through Castro Marim, Tavira, São Brás de Alportel, Loulé, Silves, Monchique, Lagos, and Vila do Bispo, with the finish line set in Alcoutim.
