Lisbon's Christmas Lights Inauguration
The Christmas lights in Lisbon will be officially inaugurated on November 23 and will remain lit until January 6, featuring a staggering 1,987,125 energy-efficient bulbs, as announced by the city council.
In a tradition that continues from previous years, the inauguration will take place at Terreiro do Paço. The event kicks off at 6:30 PM with the lighting of the Christmas tree, followed by a light and sound show and a concert by singer Áurea, who will perform holiday movie themes.
In 2023, the Christmas lights were turned on a week later, on November 30. The investment for this year's decorations is set at €749,500, matching the budget from 2023, as part of a protocol between the city and the Union of Trade and Services Associations (UACS).
Energy Efficiency Initiatives The city is proud to implement measures aimed at reducing energy consumption and enhancing efficiency. This year’s lights will utilize LED technology, achieving an 80% energy savings compared to traditional incandescent bulbs. The illuminated areas remain the same as last year, with lights planned for 45 locations, including squares, streets, and avenues throughout the city.
Approximately 1,000 light structures will be installed, comprising around 5,700 decorative pieces. The city council also emphasizes the use of sustainable materials, such as biodegradable and recyclable plastics, to minimize waste generation.
At the end of their life cycle, the installations will be recycled, contributing to a circular economy and reducing the environmental impact associated with production and disposal.
Lighting Schedule The Christmas lights will be on from 5:30 PM to midnight on Sundays through Thursdays; from 5:30 PM to 1:00 AM on Fridays and Saturdays; and from 5:30 PM to 2:00 AM on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve.
