Gouveia e Melo, the former Chief of Staff of the Navy, has expressed his concerns regarding the upcoming legislative elections in Portugal, stating that he will postpone any announcement regarding a potential candidacy for the Presidency until after the elections scheduled for May 18. He emphasized, "I do not want to contribute to unnecessary noise at a time when we are focused on the legislative elections."

During a recent event in Arouca, organized by the newly formed association Honrar Portugal, Gouveia e Melo voiced his worries about potential increased abstention in the elections, noting that repeated elections can lead to public fatigue. He highlighted the importance of addressing the growing disinterest in the democratic process, mentioning, "Abstention signifies a significant number of Portuguese who feel it is not worthwhile to express their opinion in the democratic process, which is very concerning for all of us."

He urged for a shift from the 'petty political struggle' witnessed recently to a more substantial discussion on ideas necessary for Portugal's development. Gouveia e Melo stated, "We have economic development and international security issues that need to be addressed moving forward."

While he remains open to support from the public, he clarified that he does not want organizational endorsements, preferring grassroots backing. Gouveia e Melo concluded that his focus remains on the legislative elections and the need for a credible government to tackle urgent daily issues.

He was set to participate in a rafting event on the Paiva River, which was replaced by a walk due to safety concerns. Among the attendees was businessman Mário Ferreira, who expressed his support for Gouveia e Melo's potential presidential candidacy, stating he is the right person for the job.
