New Hospital in Lisbon

The Portuguese Government has approved the purchase of five plots of land in Marvila from the Lisbon City Council for over €4.7 million to construct the new Lisbon Oriental Hospital. This decision was formalized in a decree signed by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and published on Friday.

Land Acquisition Details

The five plots cover a total area of 28,000 square meters and complement 13 other plots acquired in 2010, which exceeded 100,000 square meters at a cost of over €13 million. This expansion was deemed necessary as the previous land was insufficient for the hospital's requirements.

Financial Aspects

The decree states that the acquisition cost will be covered by funds allocated in the Exceptional Expenses chapter managed by the Directorate-General of Treasury and Finance. Furthermore, the contract draft must undergo prior inspection by the Court of Auditors.

Approval and Investment

In May, the Court of Auditors granted the green light for the new hospital, which will replace six health units in the capital. The hospital contract was awarded to Mota-Engil in February, with a projected investment of €380 million over the next three years.

Hospital Capacity and Construction

According to the Ministry of Health, the new hospital, to be built in Marvila, will have an inpatient capacity ranging from 870 to 1,300 beds, covering more than 180,000 square meters divided into three buildings. This facility will replace the hospitals of São José, Santa Marta, Capuchos, D. Estefânia, Curry Cabral, and the Alfredo da Costa Maternity.
