The outbreak was first noted on August 15, 2024, and has predominantly impacted children, with 16 cases reported among this group, along with nine cases in adults, which includes a healthcare professional.
Areas Affected
The affected individuals reside in three communities in Faro and one in Olhão, where poor hygiene conditions have facilitated the disease's transmission. Additionally, one case related to this outbreak occurred in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region, where a child was temporarily visiting family.
Symptoms and Investigation
All identified cases have shown symptoms such as fever, jaundice, abdominal pain, fatigue, anorexia, nausea, and vomiting. The regional health delegate stated that an epidemiological investigation has taken place, but it has been inconclusive regarding the outbreak's origin.
Preventive Measures
To combat the outbreak, health authorities have initiated contact tracing and vaccination against Hepatitis A. So far, 157 individuals have accepted the vaccination. Meetings have been held with municipal leaders and NGOs to support vulnerable populations and implement further preventive measures.
The health delegate emphasized the importance of preventative measures and vaccination for those at higher risk. Individuals suspecting exposure are urged to contact SNS24 for triage and advice.
