SNS Executive Recognizes Hospital Challenges
The executive director of the National Health Service (SNS), António Gandra D'Almeida, has acknowledged significant challenges at Beatriz Ângelo Hospital in Loures, stating that the facility is "underdimensioned" for the area's growing population. This admission came during a visit to Eduardo Santos Silva Hospital in Vila Nova de Gaia.
Increased Wait Times
Recently, Beatriz Ângelo Hospital has experienced prolonged wait times in emergency services, reaching up to 17 hours in some cases. As of around 2:00 PM today, patients with a yellow bracelet (urgent) faced an average wait of 12 hours and 58 minutes, while those with a red bracelet (very urgent) had to wait 1 hour and 18 minutes.
Addressing the Issue
Despite these challenges, Gandra D'Almeida emphasized that the hospital is striving to provide an adequate response to the high demand in the region. In a positive development, the Sintra City Council recently handed over the building of the new Sintra Hospital to the SNS, which is expected to benefit 400,000 users and help alleviate pressure on Beatriz Ângelo Hospital.
He stated, "Soon, we will have a new local hospital that will help address the demand."
