Mayor of Santa Cruz Critiques Government's Handling of Health Crisis
Filipe Sousa, the Mayor of Santa Cruz, has sharply criticized the regional government regarding the health crisis in Madeira. He stated that the incompetence of the government is evident in the dire state of health services, describing it as a "disgrace" affecting the population. Sousa warned that if the results of the upcoming early regional elections on March 23 do not bring about political change, "we are screwed".
"If we maintain this state of affairs in March, we are screwed"

In his statement, Sousa also targeted the regional government leader, Miguel Albuquerque, highlighting the shortage of medications in Madeira and criticizing the government's tendency to blame the lack of budget instead of addressing the issue. He questioned how this helps citizens in need of medications, particularly those fighting serious illnesses like cancer.
The mayor further directed his ire at Herberto Jesus, the president of SESARAM, who attributed the chaos in emergency services to patients themselves and their health choices. Sousa refuted this claim, asserting that it reflects a gross inversion of responsibility, placing the blame on the government rather than acknowledging the struggles of the people.
"For this government, the people are a nuisance. It's time for Madeirans to liberate themselves from the troubles of having to govern and face the people's problems"
- Filipe Sousa
As the health crisis deepens, the call for accountability from local leaders grows louder, highlighting the urgent need for effective governance in Madeira's healthcare system.
