Weather Alert for Algarve

The Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued a warning for heavy rain, potentially accompanied by thunderstorms, expected in the southern regions of Portugal on Tuesday, October 15. The alert highlights the risk of flooding and inundations.

The Algarve is currently under a yellow warning from 12 PM to 3 PM and a orange warning from 3 PM to 12 AM.

Rainfall Forecast

Rain is predicted to intensify in the afternoon, particularly in the Central and Southern regions, moving inland to the North by nightfall.

Wind Conditions

Strong winds, primarily from the south, are also anticipated along the coast south of Cabo Carvoeiro, with gusts reaching up to 70 km/h in the Central and Southern regions, especially in the afternoon.

Wednesday Outlook

Looking ahead to Wednesday, October 16, there will be periods of rain, especially in the North and Central regions during the early hours, transitioning to showers as the day progresses. These showers may be intense, with the possibility of hail and thunderstorms, particularly in the Northern and Central areas.

Safety Precautions

In light of these forecasts, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) warns of potential urban flooding due to rainwater accumulation caused by blocked drainage systems and overflow from rivers and streams.

To mitigate risks, ANEPC urges residents to:

  • Ensure the unblocking of drainage systems to facilitate water flow.
  • Remove materials that could obstruct water flow.
  • Secure loose structures such as scaffolding, signboards, and other suspended items.

Additionally, the Civil Protection advises the public to exercise caution near trees and adopt a defensive driving approach during adverse weather conditions.
