A Call for Hope at Jubilee 2025

During his homily at the Sé de Faro, he stated that the current world needs the light of hope, especially in times of darkness that threaten to obscure life and destroy dreams. He urged the community to act as sowers of hope, carrying the light brought by the risen Christ, which is stronger than any form of evil.
A Year of Renewal
Bishop Quintas expressed his desire that Jubilee 2025, themed around hope, would serve as a moment of personal and communal renewal, allowing everyone to encounter Lord Jesus, the true "door" of salvation. He stressed the importance of opening not just the cathedral doors but also the doors of our hearts to the renewing power of the Holy Spirit.
He described the jubilee as a time for personal and ecclesial grace, providing an opportunity to revitalize faith and mission within the Algarve community. The bishop encouraged the faithful to live joyfully in hope, rediscovering their calling as pilgrims in search of a greater purpose in life.
A Vibrant Gathering
The opening celebration began at the Igreja Matriz de São Pedro and concluded at the cathedral, attracting a large crowd from various parishes. D. Manuel Quintas noted the impressive participation as a positive sign of the Church's vitality, inspiring everyone, including himself, to continue on the pilgrimage called for by the Pope.
He also acknowledged the presence of many young people, recognizing their crucial role in the diocesan Church. The opening Eucharist was co-celebrated by D. António Carrilho, former bishop of Funchal, and D. Manuel dos Santos, former bishop of São Tomé and Príncipe, alongside numerous priests from the region.

He opened a Holy Door at St. Peter's Basilica, signifying the start of this significant event. The Pope's decree, 'Spes non confundit' (Hope does not disappoint), calls for the solemn opening of the jubilee year across all Portuguese cathedrals, with bishops celebrating Mass on December 29, 2024, as part of this ritual.
