Major Teams Confirmed for Algarve Tour

The British INEOS and Belgian Intermarché-Wanty, both regulars at the Algarve cycling event, are set to participate in the 51st edition of the race from February 19 to 23, 2025. This announcement was made by the organizers on Tuesday.

INEOS has been a dominant force in the Algarve over the last decade, aiming for their sixth overall victory. Notable past winners include Geraint Thomas (2015, 2016), Richie Porte (2012), Michal Kwiatkowski (2018), and Daniel Martínez (2023). The team has already won 12 stages in this event and will be participating for the 14th time, with their latest victory being by Thomas Pidcock in 2023 on the Malhão climb, a spot where other champions like Kwiatkowski and Porte have also triumphed.

There is speculation about Geraint Thomas's participation, as he was awarded the Prestige Award last year and is in his final season as a professional cyclist.

On the other hand, Intermarché-Wanty, featuring Biniam Girmay as their star rider, will make their 11th appearance in the Algarve after debuting as a ProTeam. The team secured their first victory last year with Gerben Thijssen, who also topped the points classification.

With the confirmations from INEOS and Intermarché-Wanty, the total number of WorldTour teams participating in the 51st Algarve Tour rises to seven. Other teams like Caja Rural and Lotto are also expected to join the competition.
