Summary:

  • Rui Rocha announced Iniciativa Liberal's plan to support a presidential candidate soon.

  • The candidate will represent freedoms and a reformist vision for Portugal.

  • Rocha hinted he knows who the candidate is, describing them as energetic and enthusiastic.

  • He emphasized the need for urgent reforms in institutions and the State.

  • For the upcoming local elections, IL prefers to run independently but is open to coalitions under certain conditions.

Iniciativa Liberal's Presidential Aspirations

The President of Iniciativa Liberal (IL), Rui Rocha, announced this Sunday in Porto that the party will support its own presidential candidate in the upcoming weeks, with the announcement hinging on finding the "right moment".

Rocha emphasized that the IL has a responsibility to present an alternative and a solution for the presidential elections that upholds freedoms, maintains rigor and demands within institutions, and advocates for a reformist vision for Portugal and the State.

"I believe that only the Iniciativa Liberal and its members are capable of doing this at this moment," he stated, hinting at a forthcoming challenge to a party member to assume the presidential candidacy.

During the presentation of his team and the Global Strategy Motion under the motto Accelerate Portugal, Rocha confirmed that he knows who the candidate will be, describing this individual as possessing enthusiasm, energy, and a liberal vision for the country. He indicated that the timing of the public challenge would be crucial.

In his address to supporters, Rocha outlined the profile of a candidate backed by IL: a champion of freedom, transparency, and economic prosperity, emphasizing the need for urgent reforms in institutions and the State.

Local Elections and Coalition Possibilities

Regarding the upcoming local elections this autumn, Rocha expressed a preference for IL to run independently in municipalities where they choose to compete. However, he did not completely rule out the possibility of coalitions with other parties, stating that any such agreements would need to meet specific criteria and would be considered exceptional.

He reinforced that the most natural course of action for IL at this point is to present its own candidates and proposals, maintaining a clear vision for the future of the party and the country.
