Internal Struggles Within the PSD

The PSD (Social Democratic Party) is working hard to project a united front around LuĂs Montenegro, despite underlying concerns about his leadership. Recent discussions indicate a fragility in Montenegro's position, with some party members expressing doubts while acknowledging that there is currently no viable alternative.

Hugo Soares, the PSD's Secretary-General and Montenegro's right-hand man, asserts that the party is "unidĂssimo" (very united). In a recent interview, he aimed to dispel any uncertainties regarding Montenegro's potential candidacy in the event of early elections, which Montenegro himself reaffirmed shortly thereafter.

Concerns Among Party Members

A former PSD deputy pointed out that while most members support Montenegro, this is largely due to the lack of alternatives rather than genuine confidence in his leadership. This individual criticized Montenegro for not having the courage to propose a motion of confidence earlier, suggesting that his delay was a response to pressure from the PS (Socialist Party) announcing a parliamentary inquiry.

Another party figure noted that Montenegro's situation has left him vulnerable. This sentiment is echoed by Carlos Carreiras, who mentioned that both Montenegro and Pedro Nuno Santos are in a weakened position.

Speculation on Leadership Changes

Regarding speculation about Pedro Passos Coelho possibly stepping in as a replacement for Montenegro, PSD sources have dismissed this as "out of the question." The logistics of organizing a party congress before any anticipated elections make such a transition impractical. Carreiras emphasized that discussions about Passos Coelho returning have become mere urban myths and are counterproductive.

The PSD's hope lies in the belief that while the political crisis is currently focused on Montenegro, it is ultimately the government's actions that will determine their fate.
