Jonas Vingegaard will kick off his 2024 cycling season at the Algarve Tour, as confirmed today by Visma-Lease a Bike. The Danish cyclist has set his sights on a third victory at the Tour de France, making this race a significant milestone in his career.
The two-time Tour de France champion (2022 and 2023) will debut in Portugal during the 51st edition of the Algarve Tour, which runs from February 19 to 23. Alongside him will be fellow team star Wout van Aert.
At 28 years old, Vingegaard chose this prestigious UCI ProSeries stage race as the starting point for a season that will ultimately lead to his main goal: the Tour de France, followed by the Vuelta a España from August 23 to September 14.
“This race means the most to me, and my goal is to win it for the third time,” Vingegaard stated, reflecting on his position as the current vice-champion of the 'Grande Boucle', a title he also held in 2021.
In France, he will be supported by Sepp Kuss, who recently edged him out for second place in the Vuelta 2023, alongside teammates Matteo Jorgenson, Simon Yates, and Van Aert, who will also compete in the Giro d'Italia.
“It’s great to see the team strong again. We will prepare impeccably in the coming months and do everything possible for me to win the Tour,” Vingegaard summarized in a team statement.
His quest for a third victory begins in Portugal, where he will face off against Roglic (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), another prominent contender, along with JoĂŁo Almeida (UAE Emirates), Geraint Thomas (INEOS), and newcomer Julian Alaphilippe (Tudor).
