Danish Cyclist Jonas Vingegaard Leads the Charge at Volta ao Algarve
Jonas Vingegaard, the 28-year-old Danish star, is the highlight of this year's Volta ao Algarve, taking place from Wednesday to Sunday. This marks his debut in the Portuguese race, which is also his first competition since winning the Tour of Poland in August.
"This will be my first participation in the Volta ao Algarve, which definitely adds an extra motivation," Vingegaard expressed in an interview with Visma-Lease Bike. Despite this being his season opener and following a six-month hiatus, he is not ruling out a shot at victory. "I hope to be in contention for the overall victory, although this race primarily serves as preparation for my key goals this season," he remarked, with his sights set on reclaiming the Tour de France title in 2025, after finishing second in 2024 behind Tadej Pogacar.
Vingegaard is joined by another heavyweight of the cycling world, Wout van Aert, with a solid team comprising Sepp Kuss, Tiesj Benoot, Wilco Kelderman, Ben Tulett, and Loe van Belle.
In addition to Vingegaard, other top contenders for the Portuguese race include Primoz Roglic from Red Bull and local favorite João Almeida from Emirates.
